Litgrid: Palanga – Vėjas project

Project overview

Litgrid, the transmission system operator (TSO) of Lithuania, was looking for a solution to support the seamless integration of wind energy across their grid. This requires a smarter, more resilient power grid where the capacity on the existing grid is utilized, in addition to the new power lines that are planned for construction. To fully utilize existing capacity, Litgrid deployed SUMO on the Palanga – Vėjas overhead line that contains 36 towers and is located in the windy north-west part of the Lithuanian coastline. SUMO provides system-wide visibility of conductors, transformers and other network components using both mezzo-scale and micro-scale weather data. SUMO allows Litgrid to increase grid capacity without additional infrastructure, supporting the integration of more renewable energy.
