ISA TRANSELCA: ATLANTICO PROJECT

Project overview

With 1.5 GW of wind and solar generation already approved for  connection, the Atlántico region in northern Colombia is set to experience substantial energy demand growth over the coming years. This was forecast to cause overloads on multiple transmission circuits in the area, especially in N-1 or contingency scenarios as more generation is connected. After evaluating multiple network options to resolve this need, the national planning agency, UPME, selected ISA TRANSELCA’s proposal to use SmartValve™, a modular Static Synchronous Series Compensator (m-SSSC) as the optimal solution. The project involved installing 21 SmartValves across five 220 kV circuits in 2024, unlocking over 300 MW of capacity and enhancing the network’s ability to accommodate new renewable energy generation.
