Can you share a bit about your journey so far at Smart Wires?
I started my engineering journey at the National University of Colombia, where I earned both my degree and master’s in electrical engineering and control engineering. Over the years, I’ve had the chance to work on everything from high-voltage substation design to research projects on the latest trends in power system operation. During the pandemic, I came across a company that was doing some really exciting work in power systems and renewable energy. Seeing renowned experts join their team and their commitment to employee wellbeing made me think, “There’s something special happening here.”
I initially joined as an Application Engineer, working closely with customers to ensure our technology met their needs. When the opportunity came to step into a Senior Power Electronics and Controls Engineer role, I jumped at it—it felt like the perfect chance to get back into design. The transition has been smooth, and with the support of my coworkers, both I and my cats have settled into our new life comfortably!
Tell us more about your role as Sr. Power Electronics and Controls Engineer?
In my role, I’m part of a lively engineering team where innovation never takes a break. Our power electronics team specifically focuses on components that interact directly with power systems, ensuring they perform reliably and efficiently. My day-to-day work involves everything from running simulations and conducting tests to providing technical support to our sales team. One of the great things about this company is its commitment to continuous improvement, so we’re always evaluating our designs and thinking about what’s next.
What aspect of your work are you most passionate about, and why?
What I love most is how this role allows me to combine in-depth technical knowledge with real-world problem-solving. Working with experts in FACTS technology keeps the work challenging and stimulating, and it’s exciting to be at the forefront of power system innovation. For me, the most rewarding part is seeing the tangible impact our products have in the field—they’re directly contributing to a more sustainable future. Every day feels like an opportunity to learn something new and to contribute to advancing power system technology in meaningful ways.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
One of the biggest challenges is finding the right balance between technical excellence and cost-effectiveness. We’re always aiming for innovative solutions, but they also need to be economically viable. Another challenge is understanding how our products affect power system safety and reliability. Each decision we make during the design process has real implications, so we’re extremely thorough in our analysis and testing to ensure everything performs reliably in real-world conditions.
In your opinion, what sets Smart Wires apart from other companies in the industry?
For me, it’s the unique blend of professional excellence and human connection here. We have a collaborative culture where people genuinely want to help each other, and everyone brings their expertise to keep things moving smoothly. Our team is flexible and resilient, with a willingness to step in whenever needed. This supportive atmosphere not only helps us professionally but also contributes to personal growth and well-being. It’s a rare balance, and it’s what makes our workplace truly special.
Outside of your day-to-day work, what climate action inspires you?
As someone who loves nature, I feel lucky to have grown up in Colombia, one of the world’s most biodiverse countries. I’ve seen firsthand the impact of deforestation on our ecosystems, and I have immense respect for those dedicated to protecting sacred areas like the Amazon. Their commitment to safeguarding these vital ecosystems and supporting local communities is inspiring—they’re not just protecting forests, but the future of our planet. Their work shows the kind of dedication and impact we need to drive real climate action.
